Fast fashion has changed the way we consume clothing. However, it has also created a serious environmental problem that we can no longer ignore. For this reason, through our We Are Ecocentric Movement<\/strong>, we aim to raise awareness about more responsible and sustainable fashion choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overconsumption of Clothing: A Global Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today, clothing consumption has reached alarming levels. For example, Spaniards buy an average of 34 garments per year, while in the United States the average rises to 60. In contrast, environmental goals suggest that we should significantly reduce these numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, the Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0C. Therefore, experts estimate that we should not buy more than five new garments per year if we want to move toward sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, clothing waste is a growing issue. In Spain alone, around one million tons of clothing are discarded every year. However, only 10% to 12% is reused or recycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Often Do We Really Use Our Clothes?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another important issue is the short lifespan of garments. On average, people around the world wear each clothing item only seven or eight times before discarding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, large amounts of textile waste accumulate each year. Consequently, landfills and incineration plants continue to grow, increasing environmental pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environmental Impact of the Textile Industry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The fashion industry has a significant impact on the planet. First of all, it consumes vast natural resources. For instance, it uses approximately 93 billion cubic meters of water per year, which is equivalent to about five million Olympic-sized swimming pools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, it contributes heavily to climate change. The textile sector is responsible for around 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, water pollution is another serious consequence. Chemicals used in dyeing and finishing processes often end up in rivers and oceans without proper treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, textile waste remains a major concern. Approximately 85% of produced garments are either landfilled or incinerated, which also contributes to air and soil pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Hand-Me-Downs to Conscious Consumption<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Do you remember wearing clothes passed down from siblings or relatives? In the past, reusing clothing was a normal and practical habit. Today, however, this practice has been replaced by overconsumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, we can bring this mindset back. For example, choosing ethical and sustainable brands helps reduce environmental impact. Likewise, shopping in thrift stores supports circular fashion and reduces waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How You Can Become a More Ecocentric Consumer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You also play an important role in this change. Therefore, making more conscious decisions can have a real impact. For instance, you can buy less, choose better-quality garments, and prioritize sustainable fashion brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
